Welcome to the World!

On December 15th, I was diagnosed with Twin to Twin Transfusion Syndrome (TTTS) and admitted to Yale New Haven Hospital. TTTS is fairly common in Identical Twin pregnancies. Since the boys shared a placenta, it was difficult to have the nutrients evenly distributed between the two. Baby A was declared the recipient (meaning he received too much) and Baby B was declared the donor (meaning he didn't get enough). I was only 30 weeks and 4 days pregnant. During a routine ultrasound, the tech called in a doctor and that doctor called in another doctor...and that doctor informed us that there was too much amniotic fluid in Baby A's sac and far too little in Baby B's. The staff decided that it would be a good idea to do an amniotic reduction to try and level out the boys fluid. After the procedure, the doctors told us that they removed over 2 liters of fluid off of Baby A's sac. They were hoping that by removing the amniotic fluid, it would give the boys an even playing ground and get them back on track. I told everyone I was fine and made everyone go home and pick me up in the morning...after all, I had more Christmas shopping to do! It was about 3 a.m. and the nurses came flying into my room and said that Baby B's pulse kept dropping. They took me out of my room and literally ran me down to Labor and Delivery. I felt like I was in a scene from ER. Several doctors came in and told me that I wasn't leaving the hospital pregnant and it would be a good idea to call my husband because these babies were in serious distress. I was scared because I knew that 30 weeks was far too early to deliver my boys, but it was in the hands of God and not in mine. 5 hours later, the doctors told me that now was the time and the boys had to be delivered that morning. I knew that my boys needed different things and it would be more beneficial to have them out instead of in...and within that hour, I became a Mommy of Three, Steve became a Daddy for the first time and Kady Mae became a Big Sister.
